A hand-scrawled sign facing Forum Blvd. along Stadium calls 4th Ward councilman Jerry Wade a "weasel." Another sign on West Broadway right before West Blvd. decries Mayor Hindman "protecting his friends." Yet another sign quips that everything about Fred Parry is wide enough -- except the street in front of his house. Flyers appear on cars at a city-sponsored ARC gathering. An angry man calls the KFRU Sunday Morning Roundtable about an issue he says the city has ignored for too long.
What's all the hub-bub about? A grassroots attempt to widen West Broadway's oddly narrowed artery. The problem -- which promises to worsen over time -- seems the result of poor planning: 4-lane stretches of the street suddenly narrow into a long 2-lane stretch, congesting traffic for nearly a mile and creating a nightmare for everyone -- drivers and homeowners alike.
The latest action occurred at a Nov. 5th city council work session. City staff is preparing a $105,000 "phase I design" engineering contract with CH2MHill and a stakeholder’s group will be formed with an alternative.
