Sal Nuccio Removed from Mayoral Poll

Columbia mayoral candidate and Eastside Tavern owner Sal Nuccio (left) has announced that he will not participate in any candidate forums, while notifying CARE@Paquin chairperson Sean Spence of his decision not to attend the Paquin forum.

Given his cavalier and self-promotional approach to the mayor's race last time, which seems to be repeating itself this time, the Columbia Heart Beat has removed his name from our mayoral poll.   Being used as a tool of self-promotion isn't cool, especially since this publication is the result of plenty of hard, uncompensated, volunteer labor.

If Mr. Nuccio wants to promote himself and his tavern, he's free to do so by buying an ad.  Should he start acting like he actually wants the job and the hard work of being Columbia mayor, we may consider restoring his name to any polls or mayoral race coverage.

UPDATE:  Mr. Nuccio left this comment after he was restored to the poll.  Placing him back with the other candidates would have necessitated starting all over again, eliminating their votes, so he was placed in a separate box.

revclaw1 has left a new comment on your post "Sal Nuccio Removed from Mayoral Poll":

I see what you've done. You've segregated me So now I'm seperate as if I don't deserve to be on a poll with the rest of the candidates? Make it right by tomorrow you nazi meaning i'm on that list with eveyone else you pregidous asshole or our deal is off.

  1. Is removing a mayoral candidate, who is on the ballot, from your poll the new definition of "alternative" news? I think Sal's shooting himself in the foot by not attending forums, but your deletion of Sal from the poll prevents those who are going to vote for him at the polls from registering that fact, and thus impacts on the accuracy of your poll.

  2. Yes, especially when his supporters vote multiple times, trying to circumvent the IP address and cookie-driven safeguards against such. It's like, enough already! Get serious about the campaign and the hard work of campaigning for public office, or do us all a favor and withdraw.

  3. Why did he decide not to participate in the candidate forums? I would like to know.

"If Mr. Nuccio wants to promote himself and his tavern, he's free to do so by buying an ad. Should he start acting like he actually wants the job and the hard work of being Columbia mayor..."

    Journalistic objectivity?

  4. Are they really trying to circumvent the IP or are you just surprised at how many people voted for Sal? He brought the poll to friends attention using something called "Facebook". It's a social networking website that Sal has been using for years. With his close to 850 friends it's no wonder you'd see an influx of voters for Sal.

  5. If Sal can use Facebook to get friends to vote for him, he can use Facebook to get friends to attend forums and actually interact with the other candidates. It bums me out when I think people are taking advantage of the volunteer efforts of others (the forums are all volunteer) and when they simply don't appear serious.

Sal has articulated nothing about his campaign since he first declared months ago. He's done no interviews; he's issued no platform; he's merely acted as sort of a process humbug.

Three years ago, he did the exact same thing before pulling out. What's a person to think?

As far as journalistic objectivity, I'm not reporting on Sal's campaign -- I'm opining about it. Opining is a subjective activity.

I love the anti-establishmentarian as much as anyone, but it's not fair to voters or the other candidates to have process-driven grandstanding going on.

  6. Mike here's the link to my Vote for Sal Facebook which articulates quite a bit and has been viewed by 100s. I didn't attend the forum because I'm already in contact with 100s of people out in the streets and around town on regular basis where I do articulat very much with the citizens of Columbia. My information packets will be reased to hundreds of business and housholds in feb. (Sorry for not moving as fast as you would like to see but I believe timing is important) Apparently we're just connected to different people so you have not heard of all my hard work and I haven't ever heard of you untill a couple of months ago. I agree my approach towards this whole thing is unconventional but just because it doesn't meet your standards of right and wrong doesn't mean it's wrong.

Why does my being way ahead in your poll bother you so much that you would do something so spiteful as taking me off the poll? It makes you look jealous and hateful and unwiling to eccept the results. It's like your covering up a fact and using your own self rightgeousness as the reason to do so. I don't know what I've done wrong to you that you would take this hostile stance toward me. And I don't know what I should do to change your mind about me (Sorry not good at kissing ass) Either way it's your site and I'm sure this E mail will also be censored.

  8. I don't kiss ass either Sal, and I know those folks at Paquin. That organization is all about helping people with various disabilities -- a constituency with a comparatively small voice here in town that your anti-establishment campaign should be appealing to.

You're not only disrespecting them, but also the other candidates, who are putting their asses on the line and taking the heat in a public setting.

You're also hurting your supporters by sucking just that much more of a chance to win from your campaign.

From my end, I feel used when a candidate for public office picks and chooses what they want to participate in, picking something I've done because they think it's an easier way to get noticed.

My poll is brainless in comparison to the time and effort Sean Spence and company took to organize that forum.

Not everybody is on Facebook and not everybody can evaluate your candidacy through that narrow lens. And if you become mayor, you're the mayor for ALL the people, not just your Facebook friends.

You need to go to your forums, starting with Paquin, shake hands and greet the other candidates, answer questions, deal with reporters and the media, and start giving a shit about this great gift we call elections.

(I will forgive you, however, if you don't want to sit for the compulsory interview with Hank "The Butterfly" Waters).

  9. Mike, I get why you might want to remove Sal from your poll. But as long as he's a candidate on record, shouldn't he be afforded the same exposure your alternative news gives others? I'd be worried that the actions taken here would seem somewhat prejudicial.

Thanks for the chance to comment.

  10. I see you're censoring my last comment too mike? It had useful information that would show another side of me to your readers that you appparently don't want the public to know about. Do the right thing and put me back on the poll with all the votes i recieved.

  11. Sal:

I haven't censored any of your comments, so I don't know what you're referring to.

You do the right thing and go to your forums. If you publicly agree to go that Paquin Forum, I'll put your name back on the poll and stash all this in the archives. Stop going to forums and otherwise participating, and I take you down again and put this fracas back up.

It's a fair deal. If you want to keep arguing, knock yourself out. I've got to move on.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Well I don't want to argue but you'd be a little pissed too if you saw you were winning at something and winning big then some control freak decides you don't deserve it for his own reasons and takes it away from you. I am a legal candidate in the Columbia Mayoral Race and you should acknowledge that inspite of your dislike of me for turning down this one forum. By the way you stated in your blog I will not attend ALL forum and i never said that anywhere ever you made that up.

I have noticed that you have to submit a comment twice to get it to go threw (On my PC anyway)so i believe you did not censor my last comment but just never received it. Also there was no trickery or some B.S. program that was hidding I.P. addresses so people could revote over and over again, once again thats something you made up. I'm sorry if i have alot of supporters that I can contact with a touch of a button but either way this use of technology is not illegal or wrong in any way and you use it yourself on a regualar basis to reach people and get your opinion out there so don't be a hypocrite.

Ok, as far as the forum i thought it had already passed and you were angry i didn't attend but I see the date was changed and it's still coming up in early Feb.. Now it is not required by any law or rule that I attend forums and I can move on with my campaign regardless of your poll and still have the same results in the actual voting polls come day of election. I tryed to explain to you that the only reason i said i was not interested in attending is because do to my occupation I am in contact with 100s of citizens ever week and almost every day dozens of people voice their opinions advice and heartfelt concerns to me and i take all of them seriously. Anyway a forum although necassary and very productive for the other candidates is not so for me. BUT I will make a show right here and now to prove that I am not without pause and can change my point of view if i feel it will change even one persons opinion of me by stating here on your Blog I will attend the Paguin Towers Mayoral Forum.

    There happy-S

  13. I don't think a candidate's legitimacy should be gauged on whether the person attends candidate forums. I'm not saying Sal is going to win the mayor's race. But he did get enough signatures and he will be on the ballot. If I recall, Sid Sullivan was seen as an also ran candidate when he ran for the 24th District House seat, even though he definitely had some interesting and worthy ideas. In a strange way Mike, you are practicing the same kind of snubbery.

  14. Way to go Mike! For calling on Mr.Nuccio to put forth a little more effort.
Thank you Mr.Nuccio for putting forth that effort. I think it speaks volumes of your character to take the harsh critism and respond publicly. IMO, Mike called you out because deep-down he cares about your campaign. From what I've read, you guys would make a pretty good team. Classic example of 'Brains & Brawn'... (not that Sal doesn't have any brains, obviously)... but it sure would be nice to have a Mayor with a nose ring! I think Sal represents the diversity that Columbia likes to tout for itself.

  15. I HAVE NO CLUE WHY ANYONE WOULD VOTE FOR SAL AS MAYOR. WHAT WILL HE HAVE TO OFFER FOR OUR CITY, FREE BOOZE AND A DIRTY CITY HALL JUST AS HIS BAR LOOKS???? PLEASE GO AWAY SAL I THINK ITS A HUGE JOKE TO YOU AND WE NEED SERIOUS CANDIDATES TO RUN. THE 100 PEOPLE YOU TALK OF THAT SUPPORT YOU ARE PROBABLY THE DRUNK ONES AT YOUR BAR,CORRECT???

    ReplyDelete
  16. A NOSE RING?? OK, RIGHT THAT IS WHAT WE NEED FOR A MAYOR!!! WHAT A JOKE, WE DONT NEED A MAYOR THAT WEARS CRAZY CONTACT LENSES AND NASAL RINGS IN OUR OFFICE. BE REAL PEOPLE WE NEED A SERIOUS CANDIDATE TO RUN, NOT ONE TO BUILD UP HIS SORRY EXCUSE FOR A BAR IMAGE.

  17. You haters can say all you want about why you don't want to see me become Mayor but I really don't see any reason for the personal attacks on my appearance and fashion choices. I mean come on is that a valid reason to hate someone? It only makes you sound like prejudice assholes.

There is a good reason 1000s love and respect me and it's mostly because noone else has done more for the local live music scene in
Columbia in the last 10 years than me. And i also bring an alternative nightlife spot for people to escape the rowdy underaged college joke joints around downtown and obviously alot of people appreciate my presents in Columbia. And if you don't like the appearance of my bar or it's theme that is also one thing, i mean fine it's not for eveyone especially uptight sheltered pretetious snobs but to call it diry!? Go check with the city records and you'll find I have one of the best records in downtown Columbia with the health department and the police as far as running a clean safe bar. Please feel free to not vote for me for political reasons but stop with these trashy personal and business attacks because it's uncalled for.

Tonight I'll drink a shot dedicated to the confusion of my enemies.

  18. With the comment made from the above article stating "Sal should work hard and act like he wants to be the Mayor, Not sure Sal knows the definition of working hard. To sit at his bar and have everyone do the work around you and get drunk with his customers is not my definition, of work. He will actually have to make decisions about the City and Budgets. We need a well qualified person to do that job, not a washed up wanna-be. Cant be doing shots at City Hall Sal.Time to move on and get over the thought that you could actually WIN THIS. PLEASE MAKE ME LAUGH

    ReplyDelete
  19. Blah blah blah such drama over one insignificant candidate although I think the utter failure to want to truly debate with the other candidates and to openly discuss issues that effect this entire city is rather ignorant of Sal.

Take a long look at all of these candidates and you will see there is only one choice that will benefit this city in the long run due to his past experience of working with P & Z and City Council.

Jerry Wade for Mayor. One good thing about Jerry that alot fail to realize is he will not have to be trained like all of the other candidates would have to be, He knows how Columbia City Government works inside and out.

    ReplyDelete
  20. So Sal -- never shy about dropping an F-bomb -- goes profane and the local newspaper's defending the guy, like it's his right to act that way when he's running for mayor??

Sal's an angry prick. Pretty simple. I wouldn't want him on my blog either, and I sure as hell wouldn't want him as mayor.

    ReplyDelete
  21. So what? I get that blogs are a forum for those who want to editorialize, but who are you to decide what motives are worthy for participating in government. Did it ever strike you that this sort of race goes underreported? That those Facebook friends you seem so threatened by probably wouldn't know there was a mayoral race going on if it weren't for Sal? Publicity can benefit everyone.

This man is a Columbia business owner, isn't that an important voice to have represented? I don't think you can claim to be a news source for voters when you are willing to censor a voice you don't approve of.

Political campaigns are self promotion by definition. What is the fundamental difference between running for this office as a means of attaining a higher office in the future, and running to promote the local business that contributes to Columbia's economy?
